Donate to Hurricane Relief

VALLEY FORGE, PA (ABNS 9/8/17)—American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS) urges American Baptists to pray for and donate One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) funds to those in the path of Hurricanes Harvey & Irma,

Irma has followed closely on the heels of Hurricane Harvey, which made landfall on the Gulf Coast on Aug. 25, severely affecting both Texas and Louisiana. At Corporacion Milagros del Amor, an ABHMS partner in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Executive Director Yamina Apolinaris and her staff are caring for the homeless population. Before Irma hit Puerto Rico, Apolinaris and her staff prepared and distributed kits of drinking water, pre-cooked meals, clothes, insect repellent, rain capes, basic articles and information about shelters.

Donations designated to “OGHS-Hurricane” can be made through The West Acton Baptist Church; make check out to WABC, memo: Hurricane Relief & place in offering envelope.

One hundred percent of donations go to relief efforts; no dollars are retained for administrative costs.

American Baptist International Ministries will continue to monitor the impact of the Hurricanes and join the appeal if the area is significantly impacted.

One Great Hour of Sharing is administered by the World Relief Committee of the Board of General Ministries of American Baptist Churches USA. The committee facilitates American Baptist emergency relief, disaster rehabilitation, refugee work and development assistance by establishing policy guidelines and overseeing distribution of the annual One Great Hour of Sharing offering received by churches.

American Baptist Home Mission Societies partners with American Baptists to promote Christian faith, cultivate Christ-centered leaders and disciples, and bring healing and transformation to communities across the United States and Puerto Rico.

American Baptist Churches USA is one of the most diverse Christian denominations today, with approximately 5,000 congregations comprised of 1.3 million members, across the United States and Puerto Rico, all engaged in God’s mission around the world.

One Great Hour of Sharing

One Great Hour of Sharing is an offering that makes the love of Christ real for individuals and communities around the world who suffer the effects of disaster, conflict, or severe economic hardship, and for those who serve them through gifts of money and time. Today, projects are underway in more than 100 countries, including the United States and Canada. In the 1990s, receipts have exceeded $20 million annually. While specific allocations differ in each denomination, all use their One Great Hour of Sharing funds to make possible disaster relief, refugee assistance, development aid and more.

Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering

The roots of RMMO go back to the mid-1930s, when American Baptist congregations received a Communion Fellowship Offering on the first Sunday of each month to support retired ministers, missionaries, their widowed spouses and elderly clergy within their churches. In 1977 American Baptist Churches USA launched the Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering (RMMO) to continue this time-honored tradition of expressing thankfulness.

This year our theme is The Grace of Giving.  Through the simple yet profound act of giving, American Baptist churches can share in an act of Grace that reminds the ministers, missionaries and widowed spouses who served so faithfully that they are remembered with love and gratitude.

The offering supports those who have dedicated their lives to God’s service by providing emergency assistance in times of need and a thank you check at the end of each year. We hope that RMMO will continue to serve as a joyous tradition for ABC congregations and that you will be greatly enriched this season by The Grace of Giving.
